Praise for this book

This book was such a wonderful read, from the start you begin to wonder where the storyline is going to go. The book draws you in with its detail of one living on the coast of NC, each character is unique and causes you to remember what it was like being a young person growing up with your friends.

The thrill of friends learning about something mysterious and then going on a quest to find it. The writer draws you in to the sound of the coastal waters and inlets, along with the sandy shorelines, with the smell of the salt water off the ocean. I enjoyed how Dondi's mother tells her childhood story to him concerning her grandfather and the pirate treasure, you won't be disappointed in reading this book then sharing it with your family and friends.

Calico Creek is a wonderful novel of nostalgia if you grew up on the Crystal Coast, like I did. The settings in the novel were all places from which I frequented growing up in Morehead City, NC, and I used to teach the poem "Sea Fever" to my high school seniors that sets the scene at the beginning of the novel. Calico Creek depicts two parallel stories of Michael Dondi Smythwicke (1977) and his relative Jonathan Dondi Smythwicke, a pirate from 1708. These two adventures intertwine and connect along the way as each main character goes through moments of self-discovery, and trials and tribulations, culminating in a final moment of happiness each in his own way. Dondi Day does a great job setting the stage for where each journey will lead and how each parallel story intertwines with the other. Along the way, you learn a little bit of history about Beaufort, Morehead City, and Pirate Lore and terminology, all leading up to an ending that will leave you satisfied and wanting more. This story has adventure, a little bit of romance, and of course, humor, which are great assets to any good novel.

Calico Creek touched my heart. It took me on adventures and to places I will never know and to some I get to visit today as I joined Dondi and his friends through their childhood home town. There are fishing and treasure hunting adventures and then there is a pirate adventure as well. Children and adults alike will enjoy this book and have fun on the hunt.
